Regulatory Status

We are authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA number 407228). Like most law firms, this firm is not authorised under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, but we are able in certain circumstances to offer a limited range of investment services to clients because we are members of the Law Society (a designated professional body under Part XX of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000). We can provide these investment services if they are an incidental part of the professional services we have been engaged to provide. We can also provide such services if they may reasonably be regarded as a necessary part of our professional services or if we are otherwise permitted to provide them under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. The nature of the regulated activities which we may carry on by virtue of being members of the Law Society are limited and relate, principally, to dealing as agent in, arranging deals in and advising on, certain types of investments.

We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. However, we are included on the register maintained by the Financial Conduct Authority so that we can carry on insurance mediation activity, which is broadly the advising on, selling and administration of insurance contracts. This part of our business, including arrangements for complaints or redress if something goes wrong, is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The register can be accessed via the Financial Conduct Authority website at https://www.fca.org.uk/firms/financial-services-register.

The Law Society of England and Wales is a designated professional body for the purposes of the Financial Services and Market Act 2000. The Solicitors Regulation Authority is the independent regulatory arm of the Law Society. The Legal Ombudsman is the independent body dealing with complaints against lawyers. If you are unhappy with any insurance advice you receive from us, you should raise your concerns with either of those bodies.

Complaints

You have a right to complain. We operate a complaints and redress procedure, which we will provide to you upon request. Any complaint will be dealt with promptly, fairly, openly and effectively in accordance with the procedure.

We would seek to resolve with you any complaint which you might have about any aspect of our service or our bills. If you have any complaint, in the first instance, please inform the partner primarily responsible for the engagement or write to our general London office email account.

What to do if we cannot resolve your complaint
The Legal Ombudsman can help you if we are unable to resolve your complaint ourselves. The Legal Ombudsman will look at your complaint independently and it will not affect how we handle your case. Before accepting a complaint for investigation, the Legal Ombudsman will check that you have tried to resolve your complaint with us first. Provided you have, then you must take your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman within any of the following timeframes:

  • within six months of receiving a final response from us to your complaint
  • no more than six years from the date of act/omission; or
  • no more than three years from when you should reasonably have known there was cause for complaint.

If you would like more information about the Legal Ombudsman, please contact them here, call 0300 555 0333, or write to Legal Ombudsman, PO Box 6167, Slough, SL1 0EH.

What to do if you are unhappy with our behaviour
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) can help if you are concerned about our behaviour. This could be for things like dishonesty, taking or losing your money or treating you unfairly because of your age, a disability or other characteristic.

Visit the SRA’s website (Solicitors Regulation Authority) to see how you can raise your concerns with the SRA.
