FBA-LA: Navigating Parallel Investigations

O’Melveny Of Counsel Michele W. Layne will be a guest speaker at special event hosted by the Federal Bar Association of Los Angeles. Layne will join a group of distinguished panelists discussing counsel’s need to “balance a criminal investigation from the DOJ against a civil investigation from a separate government agency, like the SEC,” when clients are faced with potential criminal charges based on regulatory violations. “This panel examines the challenges presented by parallel or joint investigations brought by the DOJ and civil regulators. We will discuss the difference between parallel and joint investigations, the legal effects of such investigations on the government’s conduct, and best practices.”
Prior to joining O’Melveny, Michele W. Layne served as the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Los Angeles Regional Director for eleven years. She draws upon her experience with the SEC to represent and advise corporate clients and their officers and directors on securities-related enforcement matters, internal and regulatory investigations, and governance and compliance issues.
